Santé Québec – CHU Sainte-Justine

Centre de cancérologie
Charles-Bruneau

A leading centre for paediatric health and hub for excellence in paediatric oncology, the Centre de cancérologie Charles-Bruneau at the CHU Sainte-Justine, a Santé Québec establishment, ensures the diagnosis and treatment of close to 65% of paediatric cancers in Quebec. Its leading-edge expertise in both research and clinical care make it a North American leader recognized for its attention to the needs of young patients and their families.

The Centre de cancérologie Charles-Bruneau at the CHU Sainte-Justine is distinguished by two major pillars.

National expertise in cellular therapy

The Centre houses a centre of excellence in bone marrow and umbilical cord blood transplants, as well as other cellular therapies, including CAR T-cell therapy. This groundbreaking immunotherapy involves reprogramming a patient’s own cells to fight cancers that are resistant to conventional treatments.

Provincial leadership

The establishment acts as the centre responsible for the paediatric cancer network, collaborating with the three other university hospital centres to ensure the coordination and quality of care in oncology for all of Quebec.

History of the Centre

1995

Opening of the first pavilion at the Centre de cancérologie Charles-Bruneau in Quebec

2007

Inauguration of the second pavilion (adjacent to the first pavilion)

This expansion (4,000 square metres over five storeys) made it possible to develop a more effective integrated approach better adapted to the needs of children. The number of beds for transplant patients thus doubled from six to 12 and the number of beds for oncology rose from 22 to 32.

2017

Inauguration of the Unité de recherche en immuno-hémato-oncologie Charles-Bruneau du Centre de recherche du CHU Sainte-Justine

This new unit includes more than 80 researchers and research staff, as well as laboratories specializing in immunotherapy, precision medicine and genomic sequencing.

2021

More than $11 million for the CHU Sainte-Justine

A donation from Fondation Charles-Bruneau to advance cutting-edge cancer research and develop new treatments, while translating discoveries into concrete solutions for young patients, particularly in diagnosis, psychosocial support and the prevention of long-term effects.

2025

A $21.3M commitment for the research

A $21.3M commitment to advance precision medicine, better target relapsed and refractory cancers, prevent long-term effects and support specialized paediatric oncology research infrastructure.

    Commitment of $50 million (2025-2030)

Over $21M invested in the Centre de cancérologie Charles-Bruneau at the CHU Sainte-Justine

This new five-year commitment of $21,281,776 to CHU Sainte-Justine will help advance precision medicine, better target relapsed and refractory cancers, prevent long-term effects, and support specialized research infrastructure in paediatric oncology.

Through this major commitment, the Fondation Charles-Bruneau reaffirms its deep conviction that transforming care requires collaboration and research grounded in the real needs of children.
